Engagement and Participation

The local Every Child Matters 2009 survey tells us that:

  • young people are more likely to feel that their views and opinions are listened to in school (38%) than young people from a reference sample (28%)
  • 47% of Year 4 and Year 6 children say that their school encourages them to contribute to community events, compared to 32% of Year 8 and Year 10 children.

The TellUs4 survey tells us that:

  • a lower proportion of children and young people give their time to help a charity or voluntary group, or done some organised volunteering (15%) compared with the national average (17%)
  • a lower proportion of children and young people contribute ideas to a school council (13%) compared with the national average (15%).
